20 years ago there was a wall in Berlin
Dec. 18, 2009 by divanova
This past November 9 was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall and, as a CSS student, I would say “the end of history.” Wesleyan’s German Haus marked the date by inviting three scholars of Eastern Europe and Germany, two from our oun Government department, to delve into the history and polemics of the events twenty years ago.
As an East European I decided to put my Wesleyan education to some good use back on the old continent this past summer and interned at a media NGO in Prague. The two pieces I published in their online journal Transitions Online approach the East-West divide from the very “Wesleyan” perspective of cinema : Velvet Cinema explores Central and Eastern Europe’s historical memory as interpreted in the last 20 years of independent film-making in the region; and Restaging a Revolution is an interview with an American film-maker, who has inspired a Czech crew and Czech production houses to make a feature film about how three youths defied the authorities in the Velvet Revolution of November 1989.
I hope you enjoy this “Eastern connection.”

I didn’t realize that the new logo would be positively comparable with our 43rd president (shrub). Apparently it is and I say go for it. Everyday when I read/hear about the far right I wonder about the education and thought patterns of their spokes people. It bewilders me. It might be a tough task for an 18/19 year old, but I really am curious about what and how he or she thinks. It would be transformative to the dialogue on campus if there were a contingent of students with a more “right wing/conservative” outlook.
It looks as though this comment (above) was intended for the Magazine Redesign article…
